I recently came upon Kraft foods’ home farming community sponsored by Triscuit. I actually liked the site, it’s a very good primer to growing vegetables at home. And here’s my more detailed review. They have vegetable profiles. Basic, cartoony, but simple enough to make growing broccoli seem easy. My only complaint, very little variety. The [...]
Start of the Garden 2010
My garden last year failed pretty badly. I decided to have a much more conservative approach this year and will be sticking to my 4 raised beds and some vegetables in pots on the patio. A couple weeks ago we planted a bunch of seeds that I had leftover from last year. Our friend Larisa [...]
Another lovely insect from my garden
I’m sorry for anyone who reads this blog with arachnophobia because I’m about to make a post that may send you running for the hills due to irational fears. We often come across Spiders in the garden. We probably have dozens of different varieties in a small area of the garden alone. I generally ignore [...]
Things I hate – Japanese Beetles
My mom asked me the other day if I ever write negative things in this blog. I generally try to keep this blog pretty positive. I like to write posts that remind me that my life is full of adventures. But today I will make an exception. I will write about something I hate: Japanese [...]
Mystery Weed Revealed
Remember my mystery weed next to the driveway? It’s been identified as a Burdock. The plant that inspired the innovation of Velcro with it’s hooked tendrils that attach seeds to animal coats and human vestments. Wikipedia tells me that some varieties are actually cultivated for dishes from other cultures. I’m still considering it a weed [...]
Flowers – Daffodils
I like flowers. They are pretty, they smell nice, they add colour. But I cannot eat (most) flowers, therefore I know nothing about them. I’m pretty sure I have a black thumb when it comes to flowers. For the most part flowers were left to my dad, the professional landscapers on the college campus and [...]
Compost Bin
Compost Bin, originally uploaded by mbarsalou. So it’s earth day, should I post something earthy, why not. So a few weeks ago I was peeling potatoes and getting irritated at throwing away the peels. I was raking the leaves and dragging them off into the woods. I was throwing away the last few pieces of [...]
Audrey and the Seedings
Audrey, originally uploaded by mbarsalou. Audrey was sitting on the mini greenhouses for the seedlings again this morning (being a hen). So I decided to take a picture before correcting her. I seriously don’t understand why she wants to sit there all the time.
Seedlings
So all the seeds that I’ve sown indoors this Spring have sprouted except for the Watermelons. Researching a little on the internet I found that I may not be keeping the seedlings warm enough for the watermelon’s liking. We are currently using a room above the garage that we heat minimally. I’ve been keeping the [...]
Seeds are here
It’s amazing to see physically how many seeds I ordered from Fedco. Especially considering how many of them are beans and peas. Spent part of Saturday planting the seeds for watermelon, eggplant, broccoli, brussel sprouts and tomatoes. I’m so excited to see how these heirloom plants do this summer. The stuff I’ve already planted has [...]
